Beechgrove, Kirkpatrick-Durham

Beechgrove is a late 18th and early 19th century two-storey, three-bay cottage with alterations made in the late 19th century to the first floor, resulting in timber dormers that break through the eaves. It is flanked by single-storey, asymmetrical two-bay service wings, with the wing to the left being slightly taller.

The cottage is built of partially rendered rubble with smooth rusticated quoins and polished margins; the service wings are painted rubble. A central, projecting curved gabled porch with a finial is a prominent feature. It has a round-arched doorway, a semi-circular fanlight with decorative astragals, and a panelled door. The windows are sash and case with four-pane glazing. The dormers have timber gables and finials. The roof is slate, with flat skews and corniced end stacks.

Beechgrove is part of a group of buildings that includes the Schoolhouse and 37-39 St David’s Street.
