Description

The Gardener's House, located within the walled gardens of Raehills House, was likely built around 1834, possibly by William Burn. The gardens now form a symmetrical arrangement with two walled enclosures, the northern one dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. A central courtyard is bisected by a high wall containing a basket archway. This archway abuts the front wall of a single-story cottage to the north and faces a long range of lean-to potting sheds to the south. An entrance to the western court is flanked by hoodmoulded and round-headed garden gateways and by circular ornamental "sentinel boxes". A conical-roofed, circular structure, potentially a fruit store, is situated at the southeast angle of the inner court.

The main elevations of the principal buildings are faced in red ashlar, while the remainder is mostly rubble-built, with slate roofs. The cottage has three bays and a piended porch to the court, set within the re-entrant angle of the dividing wall and supported by a single Doric column. The cottage features sash windows with a vertical glazing pattern and end stacks. Low flanking wings are present; the western wing is largely concealed within the walled garden, although it has dummy slits, while the eastern wing is adjoined by a recessed range of sheds.

The garden walls enclose each area and feature curved end walls furthest from the courtyard. The southern enclosure has high, rubble-built walls, while the northern enclosure primarily consists of brick walls with plain iron railings. A smaller, ashlar-walled enclosure is located at the south, nearest the house.
