Description

The Fruit Shed, located within the walled gardens of Raehills House, was likely constructed around 1834, possibly by William Burn. The complex now comprises two walled gardens, the northern one dating to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, arranged symmetrically around a central courtyard. This courtyard is bisected by a high linking wall featuring a basket archway, which connects to the front wall of a single-story cottage to the north and a long range of lean-to potting sheds opposite. The western court entrance is flanked by hoodmoulded and round-headed garden gateways and decorative circular "sentinel boxes". A conical-roofed, circular structure, potentially a fruit store, stands at the southeastern angle of the inner court.

The main elevations of the principal buildings are constructed from red ashlar, while the remainder is primarily rubble-built, all with slate roofs.

The cottage features three bays and a piended porch supported by a single Doric column, situated in the re-entrant angle of the dividing wall. It has sash windows with a vertical glazing pattern and end stacks. Low flanking wings extend from the cottage, with the western wing largely concealed and treated as part of the walled garden, though featuring dummy slits. An eastern wing connects to a recessed range of sheds.

The garden walls enclose the areas, each with curved end walls furthest from the central courtyard. The southern enclosure has high rubble-built walls, while the northern enclosure is mainly brick with plain iron railings. A smaller, ashlar-walled enclosure is located on the south side, closest to the house.
