Description

The South West Potting Shed is part of a group of buildings including walled gardens, a gardener’s house, outbuildings, and sheds, located at Raehills House. The gardens, likely designed around 1834 and possibly by William Burn, consist of two walled areas – the northern garden dating to the late 19th and early 20th centuries – with a central courtyard. This courtyard is bisected by a high wall containing a basket archway, which connects to the front wall of a single-storey cottage to the north and a long range of lean-to potting sheds opposite. The outer western court entrance is flanked by hoodmoulded and round-headed garden gateways, alongside ornamental, circular "sentinel boxes." A conical-roofed, circular structure, possibly a fruit store, is situated at the southeast angle of the inner courtyard.

The principal buildings exhibit red ashlar facades, while the remainder are primarily rubble-built, all with slate roofs. The cottage is three bays wide, with a piended porch supported by a single Doric column at the re-entrant angle of the dividing wall. It features sash windows with a vertical glazing pattern and end stacks. Low flanking wings are present, with the western wing concealed and integrated into the walled garden, punctuated by dummy slits. The eastern wing connects to a recessed, long range of sheds.

The garden walls enclose each area with curved ends furthest from the courtyard. The southern enclosure is characterized by high, rubble-built walls, while the northern enclosure mostly comprises brick walls with plain iron railings. A smaller, ashlar-walled enclosure is found at the south, closest to the main house.
