Description

The Southern Walled Garden at Raehills House, likely designed around 1834 perhaps by William Burn, comprises two walled gardens arranged symmetrically. The northern garden dates to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and both are linked by a high wall bisecting a central courtyard. This wall features a basket archway and abuts a single-storey cottage to the north and a range of lean-to potting sheds opposite. The western court entrance is flanked by hoodmoulded, round-headed garden gateways and by circular, ornamental “sentinel boxes” with conical roofs. A circular, conical-roofed structure, possibly a fruit store, is located at the southeastern angle of the inner court.

The cottage is three bays wide, with a piended porch supported on a single Doric column, situated in the re-entrant angle of the dividing wall. It features sash windows with a vertical glazing pattern and end stacks. Low flanking wings extend from the cottage; the western wing is largely concealed and treated as part of the walled garden, though it incorporates dummy slits. The eastern wing adjoins a recessed, long range of sheds.

The main elevations of the principal buildings are constructed of red ashlar, while the remainder are mostly rubble-built with slate roofs. The garden walls enclose each space, with curved end walls farthest from the courtyard. The southern enclosure has high rubble walls, while the northern enclosure is primarily brick with plain iron railings. A smaller, ashlar-walled enclosure sits closest to the house on the southern side.
