Description
This potting shed is part of a group of buildings including walled gardens, a gardener’s house, and outbuildings at Raehills House. The potting sheds likely date from around 1834 and may have been designed possibly by William Burn. The gardens are arranged symmetrically, consisting of two walled areas. The northern garden dates to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A central courtyard is bisected by a high linking wall incorporating a basket archway. This wall abuts the front wall of a single-story cottage to the north and a long range of lean-to potting sheds on the opposite side. The western entrance to the outer court features hoodmoulded and round-headed garden gateways, as well as ornamental circular "sentinel boxes." A conical-roofed, circular structure, possibly a fruit store, is located at the southeast angle of the inner court.
The main buildings are constructed of red ashlar, while the remainder are mostly rubble-built, with slate roofs. The cottage features a three-bay design with a piended porch supported by a single Doric column, set within the re-entrant angle of the dividing wall. It has sash windows with a vertical glazing pattern and end stacks. Low flanking wings are present; the western wing is concealed and treated as part of the walled garden, incorporating dummy slits. An eastern wing is connected to a recessed range of sheds.
The garden walls enclose the areas, with curved end walls situated furthest from the courtyard. The southern enclosure has high rubble-built walls, while the northern enclosure is mostly brick with plain iron railings. A smaller, ashlar-walled enclosure is located closest to the house on the southern side.
