Description

The Northern Walled Garden at Raehills House, likely designed circa 1834 perhaps by William Burn, comprises a symmetrical arrangement of two walled gardens. The northern garden dates to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A central courtyard provides a focal point, bisected by a high linking wall featuring a basket archway. This wall abuts the front wall of a single-storey cottage to the north and a long range of lean-to potting sheds opposite. The outer, western court entrance is flanked by hoodmoulded and round-headed garden gateways, as well as two ornamental circular sentinel boxes. A conical-roofed, circular structure, possibly a former fruit store, sits at the southeastern angle of the inner court.

The principal buildings exhibit red ashlar on their main elevations, while the remainder of the structure is predominantly rubble-built, all with slate roofs.

The cottage, located in the re-entrant angle of the dividing wall, has three bays and a piended porch facing the central courtyard. The porch is supported by a single Doric column. Sash windows feature a vertical glazing pattern, and there are end stacks. Low flanking wings extend from the cottage; the western wing is partially concealed and appears as an integral part of the walled garden, although it does incorporate dummy slits. The eastern wing is connected to a recessed long range of sheds.

The garden walls, which enclose each garden, have curved end walls furthest from the courtyard. The southern enclosure has high rubble-built walls, while the northern enclosure primarily features brick walls with plain iron railings. A smaller, ashlar-walled enclosure is located at the southern boundary, nearest the house.
