Description
The South East Potting Shed is part of the walled gardens at Raehills House, likely dating to around 1834 and possibly designed by William Burn. The gardens comprise two walled areas, the northern one dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, linked by a central courtyard. The courtyard is bisected by a high wall with a basket archway, which adjoins the front wall of a single-story cottage to the north and a long range of lean-to potting sheds to the south. A west-side entrance to the outer court is flanked by hoodmoulded, round-headed garden gateways and ornamental circular "sentinel boxes." A conical-roofed, circular structure, possibly a fruit store, stands at the southeast angle of the inner court.
The main elevations of the principal buildings are constructed of red ashlar, while the remainder is mostly rubble-built, all with slate roofs. The cottage, situated in the re-entrant angle of the dividing wall, has a piended porch supported by a single Doric column. It features sash windows with a vertical glazing pattern and end stacks. Low flanking wings are present, with the western wing concealed and integrated into the walled garden, but featuring dummy slits. The eastern wing has a recessed, long range of sheds adjoining it.
The garden walls enclose the areas, each having curved end walls furthest from the courtyard. The southern enclosure has high rubble-built walls, while the northern enclosure is primarily brick walls with plain iron railings. A smaller, ashlar-walled enclosure is located at the south, closest to the house.
