Description
St Ann’s Bridge is a castellated roadbridge, likely designed by Alexander Stevens, dating from 1795. It was substantially widened to the south and improved in 1817. The bridge carries the A701 road over the Kinnel Water and features a single, wide segmental arch over the water, with smaller, hoodmoulded pedestrian arches flanking it. The bridge is constructed of coursed and squared red rubble with polished dressings. Square recesses are located below block corbels, which support crenellated parapets. Parapet walls continue along the roadway on the west bank, and a milestone is situated at the southern end.
According to the Old and New Statistical Accounts, an earlier bridge existed on the site as early as 1782. St Ann’s Bridge is part of a group that includes Raehills gatepiers and screen walls.
