Description

The Ewes Parish Church, built in 1867 and designed by James Burnet of Ewesbank, Langholm, is a rectangular, five-bay Gothic church constructed of snecked and squared rubble with contrasting ashlar dressings. The church features pointed-headed openings, all hood-moulded except for the west-facing ones. A gabled porch is situated at the north end of the east wall, containing a recessed two-leaf door with columned jambs. The main gables are each punctuated by a three-light window with columned jambs and mullions, situated below cusped openings. The south window is located beneath a relieving arch, and the apex of the gable is topped by a belfry. A continuous string course runs at sill level, with buttresses marking the bays and corners. The roof is covered with graded slates, and the skews are saw-toothed. A vestry is attached to the west wall.

The interior is ungalleried. The churchyard is enclosed by rubble-built walls, topped with a low coping and featuring a gate and spiked cast-iron railings on the west side. The churchyard contains 17th to 20th century stone monuments, and is the site of the earlier St Cuthbert's Church. A Tuscan-style Malcolm family tomb chest, dating to around 1803, is present, along with a panelled monument topped with an urn finial, erected around 1814.

A bell, dated 1652 and signed Jacobus Monteith, is mounted on a tree to the east of the church. The building remains in ecclesiastical use. An inventory from the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments in 1920 references the bell.
