Description
Dated 1736, this is a two-story, three-bay farmhouse with later alterations and additions. It is constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings and margins. The south elevation features a gabled porch added probably late in the 19th century. Windows in the outer bays have been altered to bipartite arrangements, reusing original dressings, which are all deeply chamfered. The roof is slate, with straight skews and rebuilt end stacks. There are blocked low doorways, each with a relieving arch, at the south end of each gable, alongside two blocked attic lights in the east gable.
The rear (north) additions are in three main phases. A full-height wing to the northeast was built in the mid-18th century, featuring an east-facing window with chamfered margins. An addition to the east, with a swept roof and located in a re-entrant angle, primarily dates from the 19th century.
The interior has been remodelled, with a wide, segmental-arched fireplace with chamfered edges and oven recesses, which were formerly built up but exposed around 1938/9.
A detached east wing extends south from the main house. It includes a basket-arched cart opening (now a garage) below a loft window in the south gable, with stables and a bothy contained at the north end. A deep, circular well shaft, neatly lined with red rubble, is located at the northeast corner. A west flanking wing was demolished in the latter half of the 19th century.
The building is included in the list due to the incorporation of unusual older fabric. Historical records and information from the owner reveal a circa 1828 plan showing two flanking wings.
