Description

Balcarres, located at 6 High Street in Lochmaben, is a fine house that likely dates from around 1771 or 1774, possibly incorporating earlier materials at the rear. This two-storey building, which has a cellar, features five bays and a shallow offset above the basement, with rear wings that create an open courtyard. The front of the house is finished in painted ashlar with margins, while the rest is made of whitewashed rubble.

The main (west) elevation includes a central door with two leaves, a plain fanlight, and is set within a lugged and corniced architrave, all approached by steps. It has sash windows with four-pane glazing set in wide margins, a low pend door to the right, and blocked openings for the basement. There is an eaves and lintel band, straight skews, and 19th-century end stacks. The roof is covered with graded slates. To the northeast, there is a two-storey rear wing, and a long single-storey outbuilding connects to 10 High Street. There is also a boarded loft opening above the pend and a detached outbuilding to the east, which continues behind 3 Queen Street.

Inside, the house features panelled doors within architraves, moulded cornices (some with dentils), and wooden stair balusters with bulbous newels.
