Description
Drumlanrig Walled Garden and Cottages, built around 1822, features a large quadrangular walled garden with a yard to the north that encloses potting sheds and outbuildings, along with three adjoining single-storey cottages. The garden walls are constructed of brick and topped with ashlar coping, featuring archways with a central gate on each wall. Temporary animal pen lean-tos currently line the inner walls, while original lean-to potting and boiler sheds are attached to the outer north wall, and modern animal pens are on the outer south wall. A small "triumphal arch" serves as the west gate, and the north gate is pedimented with paired pilasters. The yard is enclosed by a rubble-built wall with ashlar coping and square gatepiers.
The cottages were built in at least three phases and are arranged in a rough T-plan. Each cottage has three bays with a central door and is made of stugged red ashlar with polished dressings. The original south-facing cottage features 16-pane glazing, while the other north-facing cottages, which were likely doubled in depth in the late 19th century, are arranged symmetrically. The inner two bays on the north elevation are advanced and include tripartite windows. All cottages have sash windows with small-paned glazing, coped stacks, and piended roofs covered with graded slates.
