Description
Low Gardens House is a picturesque two-storey cottage ornée designed by architect William Burn around 1831 for the gardener of the Drumlanrig Estate. The house features mostly mullioned and transom windows, various roof levels, and advanced gables with deeply projecting eaves supported on brackets. It has decorative barge boards with pendants and an open verandah facing east.
The east elevation has an advanced gable on the left, which includes a canted ground floor window that is corbelled above to a square shape, with a similar treatment on the inner north gable. The verandah, which has a gabled outer bay above the steps, showcases three basket-arched bays with a strapwork patterned parapet and two dormers above. There is a blind doorway in a dummy porch on the south side. The house has wall-head or axial stacks, mostly featuring grouped diamond flues. A low service wing adjoins the west wall and extends south, although a second wing has now been demolished.
