Eskvale, Townhead, Langholm

Eskvale is a two-storey house, likely built in the 1830s or 1840s, located at the northern corner of High Street and the approach to Townhead Bridge. The house is set on a slope by the riverbank, with a basement at the rear. It features three long bays on its main elevations, with additional windowed bays in the curved corners facing the bridge approach. Constructed from green whinstone rubble, it has contrasting ashlar dressings. The eastern openings facing High Street are architraved, featuring a central panelled door with a fanlight set in a corniced doorpiece. There is a corniced square projection to the west, which is two storeys high and has a door at the basement level. All openings are adorned with long and short worked dressings. The house has sash windows throughout, mostly with a 12-pane glazing pattern. It includes an eaves course, and the end stacks have been rebuilt in brick. The roof is slated, piended at the south and square over the curved corners.
