Description
Townhead Bridge in Langholm is a road bridge built in 1775 by contractor Robin Hotson. It features three segmental arches that span the River Esk, constructed from grey rubble with ashlar dressings, recessed arch-rings, and pointed cutwaters, which have some red ashlar repairs. The roadway was widened in 1880 by contractor John Hyslop, using steel cantilevers. This widening includes angle brackets and cutwaters that rise to provide support, along with latticed steel parapets that have lamp brackets at the abutments. The roadway slopes downwards from the eastern bank to the western bank.
