Description

Westerkirk Parish Church in Bentpath is a simple Gothic church designed by architect Burnet of Langholm and dated 1880. The church features five buttressed bays and a three-stage square tower at the south gable, along with a gabled vestry on the north side. It is constructed from squared and snecked whin rubble, accented with contrasting grey ashlar dressings. The openings are pointed and hood-moulded, with stepped angle buttresses.

The south-facing tower has a two-leaf door with nook-shafts, and pointed openings on the elevations, with paired and louvred windows at the top belfry stage. The north gable contains 20th century leaded glass windows, while the rest of the church has opaque modern glass. The roof is finished with graded slates and features saw-toothed skews topped with a cross finial on the north side.

To the south, there is an ashlar-coped rubble-built retaining wall, with the main gate located at the east end. This gate is adorned with simple wrought-iron gates and railings, as well as cast-iron gatepiers, and there is a pedestrian gate on the west side.
