Description

The Johnstone Mausoleum, located at Westerkirk Parish Church, was designed by Robert Adam around 1790. This classical mausoleum features a square plan and a domed roof, constructed from lightly droved grey ashlar with polished dressings. The roof is leaded and topped with a ball finial.

On the south elevation, a pediment above the central doorway is supported by paired engaged Greek Doric columns. The frieze is decorated with bucrania, and the doorway itself is round-headed with a keystone, featuring pilastered jambs set within a square-headed panel. There are flanking alcoves beneath a fluted frieze and cornice. The inner bay of the other elevations is slightly advanced, with a niche (and a window on the north side) set in a round-headed panel.

Inside, the mausoleum has panels on the east and west walls below a continuous triglyph frieze. The metopes, which were originally decorated with models of human skulls, have been destroyed. A marble monument dated 1824 is positioned against the east wall, and the interior features a flagstone floor and a stone-vaulted ceiling.
