Description
Westerkirk Old Churchyard in Bentpath is a quadrangular churchyard that contains the site of an old parish church, along with the Johnstone Mausoleum designed by Robert Adam, which is listed separately. The churchyard features many notable stone monuments from the 17th to 19th centuries, including a monument believed to have been carved by Thomas Telford in memory of his father and brother. There is also a Greek Revival tomb chest with small Doric columns at the corners. The headstones display impressive late 17th and early 18th-century artisan sculpture with classical details. The churchyard is enclosed by rubble-built walls with ashlar coping, and there are gates at the north end of the east and west walls, along with square gatepiers topped with ball finials.
