Description
The White House in Bentpath is a manse that was rebuilt in 1783 and underwent substantial repairs in 1821. Further work was carried out by R B Burnet of Langholm between 1910 and 1911. The building consists of two adjoining parallel blocks, with the southern block likely being a later addition. It features a twin-gabled east elevation with a central square porch.
The south elevation is made of whitewashed rubble with rendered sections and grey ashlar margins. It has four bays with 12-pane sash windows throughout. The two right bays form a shallow bow, with enlarged ground floor windows. A tall wallhead stack is positioned on a ramped plinth between the remaining bays, and the roof is piended to the left. The recessed wing added in 1910-11 is a single wide bay, and a conservatory was added around 1970, filling the re-entrant angle.
The asymmetrical rear (north) elevation includes a low outbuilding that now serves as a garage, and there are corniced stacks with slate roofs. Inside, there are several floor and ceiling levels, some decorative cornice and ceiling plasterwork, and recently imported chimney pieces. Stone steps lead down to a small cellar.
The garden is enclosed by a rubble-built wall topped with ashlar coping. There is a gate at the north end of the east wall, featuring square, stugged ashlar gatepiers with bell-cast caps, and an iron gate with railings on the south wall.
