Description
Canonbie School is a single-storey school building from the late 19th century, designed with a symmetrical layout. It is constructed of stugged red ashlar stone, featuring contrasting dressings.
The east elevation consists of a four-bay inner range that includes a blind central oculus and end stacks. There are two-bay wings with gabled entrance bays, which have shouldered doors topped with fanlights and raised hoodmoulds. The outer bays are slightly recessed, and the end walls are twin-gabled. All windows are small-paned mullioned sash types. The skews are saw-toothed with gabletted skewputts and fleur-de-lis finials, and the building has slate roofs.
At the rear, there is a three-bay wing that is central on the east wall, with a shelter beyond that has a corrugated iron roof, open to the north and south. There are some minor additions at the rear of the building.
The playground is enclosed by rubble-built walls with ashlar coping, which incorporate former toilets, and there are spiked cast-iron railings to the west.
