Description

Canonbie Bridge is a road bridge built in 1752 by contracting masons Gideon Boyd of Greystail and Andrew Mein of Westerkirk. The bridge features three segmental arches that span the River Esk, with the roadway sloping down from the eastern to the western bank. It is constructed from rubble, with red ashlar voussoirs and pointed cutwaters on either side. There have been repairs to the northeast abutment using bull-nosed red ashlar. The roadway was widened in 1899, supported by cantilevers and adorned with decorative cast-iron brackets. In around 1950, lattice-patterned metal parapets were added, although some of the original railings from 1899 still remain at the southwest end.
