Description
6-8 Butts Street in Annan is an early 18th-century townhouse that underwent alterations and was converted into a restaurant between 1985 and 1986. The building is two stories tall with five bays and was extended to the north by three additional bays, likely in the first half of the 19th century. It features painted rubble with contrasting chamfered ashlar margins and has a continuous slated roof.
The original house has an altered ground floor, with a central door that does not have its original margins, and two ground floor windows that replace four original ones. The first floor retains five regular original bays with sash windows that have 12-pane glazing. The building has a steep-pitched shallow gable with skews and skewputts at the south end, and the end stacks have been rebuilt.
The original interior was largely destroyed in 1985 without proper documentation, leaving only fragments of original timber panelling. The addition includes a door and window at ground level and three first floor windows. There are also two tall corniced square rusticated ashlar gatepiers to the south, although their finials have been removed, and two barrel-vaulted cellars alongside, all of which are contemporary with the original house.
