Description
48 South Street in St Andrews is a building dating from 1880 that features two main storeys above a lower ground floor. It includes a three-bay addition to the adjacent town house at No 46, which makes it appear as a self-contained house. The exterior is constructed from squared and snecked cream sandstone ashlar, with a base course, cornice, coped parapet, and raised chamfered surrounds to the openings.
On the north (entrance) elevation, there is a central bay with a doorway offset to the left and a single window to the right. The entrance features a boarded door with a glazed panel, and there are single windows above and in all floors of the flanking bays. The second-floor windows have iron guards.
The south (rear) elevation has single windows in the bay to the left and a three-light canted window across the chamfered angle to the outer right, along with a substantial wallhead stack.
The interior, which was not seen in 1995, includes timber sash and case and casement windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and features a lower pitched roof behind, along with corniced mutual stacks and original cast-iron rainwater goods.
