Description
42 South Street in St Andrews is a building dating from the 15th to the 17th century. It is three stories tall with four windows and a central chimney. The exterior is harled with chamfered margins and features a moulded pend and a Martin armorial panel. The building has a three-story section in the courtyard with swept heads on the second floor. The southwest wing, constructed around 1580, has part of an arcade that is now exposed. There is a large bay window and other alterations made by George Rae in 1862 for Principal J.D. Forbes. The south gable has a crow-stepped design and a doorpiece with Doric columns, topped with a segmentally pedimented window. The interior contains notable work. The building was renovated between 1970 and 1973.
