Description

The Primary School in Thornhill, designed by architect Charles Howitt of the Drumlanrig estate, was built between 1864 and 1865. This single-storey T-plan school features a lower east wing and is situated on a slope with a basement at the west. The building is designed in a Tudor style, constructed from channelled, bull-faced pink ashlar with polished dressings, hood-moulds, and raised quoins.

The long south wall has Tudor-arched bipartite windows across four bays, while the west gable includes similar windows flanking a projecting chimney breast, positioned above depressed-arched basement openings. The smaller gabled east wing has gabled porches on the north and south sides, with a door that is now blocked. The north wing features a tripartite window in its gable, and there is a modern addition in the re-entrant angle. The school has a splayed base course, saw-toothed skews with gableted skew-putts, offset corniced stacks, and slate roofs adorned with cast-iron cresting.
