Description
The Police House on East Morton Street in Thornhill, designed by Barbour and Bowie of Dumfries, was built in 1909. This building is a Scots Baronial police station with an adjoining house, constructed entirely of bullfaced red ashlar with polished dressings and crow-stepped gables.
The house is two storeys tall and has three bays, featuring a central porch with a curved gable. The outer first-floor windows have pedimented dormer heads, while the other windows are bipartite. The inner window has a swept roof, and there are coped end stacks along with a rear wing.
The police station resembles a two-storey "tower house" with a splayed base. It has a corbelled and crenellated parapet that encloses the gable. The lower window is barred, and the upper windows are segmental-arched. There is a linking bay with a round-arched door set in a lean-to porch, and low wings flank the building and extend to the rear. The roofs are covered with slate. A coped bullfaced ashlar wall runs along the roadside, sweeping down and railed towards the square, with pyramid-capped gatepiers marking the entrance.
