Description
The School Caretaker's House in Thornhill was designed by architect Charles Howitt of the Drumlanrig estate and is dated 1867. This two-storey, three-bay house is constructed of bullfaced pinkish ashlar with polished dressings and features hood-moulded Tudor-arched openings. The inner bay is advanced and gabled, with a boarded two-leaf door. The windows are all bipartite with lying-pane glazing and have gabled dormer heads. The house has saw-toothed skews and projecting chimney breasts with corniced end stacks, and the roof is covered with graded slates. There is a twin-gabled rear wing that is not of uniform construction.
