Description

Barhoise Mill is a T-plan mill dating to 1827, built on a slope to take advantage of falling ground. The complex comprises a main block housing the mill, grain store, and kiln, with additional arms containing a pot barley mill and a fanner elevator built into the bank. The building is constructed of whinstone rubble with sandstone ashlar coping to the skews, granite quoins, and granite dressings. Two doors are located at ground floor level, leading to the mill and kiln. A door to the top-floor grain store is situated in the gable end, breaking the eaves and flanked by later machinery installations. An end gable faces the lade and retains wooden upright shaft and wooden bearing supports associated with the former water wheel, along with a gablehead window. The roof is covered in graded grey slates, with rooflights also present. The mill's interior contains three pairs of millstones, a dust harp, and a fanner, along with a mill sieve. The boarded grain store features wooden cross beams supported by projecting blocks. Although in a poor condition, the mill retains notable features in a compact group and represents a comparatively early example of its type.
