Johnston School, St Mary Street, Kirkcudbright

Johnston School, located on St Mary Street in Kirkcudbright, was built in 1847. It is a single-storey building featuring a prominent central Italianate tower. The structure is constructed from rubble, with granite angle piers and quoins at the tower, and polished sandstone dressings. The main block is symmetrical, highlighted by the central tower that has a semi-circular arched door and louvered openings above. The building has deeply projecting eaves, a cornice, and a shallow piended roof topped with a weathervane.

There are paired semi-circular arched windows in a recessed bay, along with similarly arched tripartite windows in the advanced bays. The outer wide recessed bays contain doors. To the left, there is an additional range with two bipartite windows. The roofs are covered with piended slate. There are modern additions to the left and rear of the building.
