Description

East Range, Courtyard Block, Holmhill was built between 1827 and 1828, with some alterations. It is a two-storey, three-bay house featuring pedimented lower flanking wings and courtyard ranges at the rear (north). The house was heightened by three masonry courses, likely in the mid-19th century. Originally, the wings were symmetrical, but the east wing is now two storeys, having been heightened sympathetically. The exterior is finished in painted rubble with ashlar dressings.

On the south elevation, there is a central square porch, 12-pane sash windows, end stacks, and a shallow-pitched piended roof. Each advanced wing has a single window set in a shallow recessed round-arched panel. At the rear, low lean-tos connect a deep stair turret with the wings.

Inside, the front ground floor rooms feature good chimneypieces; the west room has a Doric-columned chimneypiece, while the other has a Vitruvian-scrolled frieze. There are two parallel single-storey courtyard blocks with doors and square-headed cart openings, a single axial stack, and roof ventilators. The block to the west includes a dovecot in the south gable and a wall-head dormer to the west, with a rubble-built wall to the north. All roofs are slated.
