Description

Nith Bridge in Thornhill is a road bridge that began construction around 1774 but collapsed in 1776 and was rebuilt in 1778. It was strengthened between 1930 and 1931. The bridge features two large segmental arches spanning the River Nith, all constructed from red ashlar stone. It has recessed arch rings and pointed central cutwaters that rise to form pedestrian refuges. The parapets are widened over massive abutments, which are buttressed, and the bridge includes square piers topped with pyramidal caps.
