Description
The Old Church at Virginhall was built around 1843 by contractor John Jardine and masons Messrs MacLauchlan from Gatelawbridge, with Samuel Bell as the joiner. This former Free Church is situated on a sloping site and has a plain rectangular shape, featuring a lower vestry attached to the west gable. At the basement level, there is a west-facing flat-arched cartway. The building is constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings, and it has painted margins around the tall, round-headed windows, most of which are now blocked.
The north wall features a gabled red ashlar porch with a central round-headed doorway, while the west side has an off-centre entrance. There are five windows on the north wall and four on the south wall, along with three-light windows in the east gable. A bronze birdcage belfry sits above the west gable, topped with a tall weathervane finial. The church is covered with slate roofs.
