Gate Piers, Kathleen Cottage, Lochnaw, Stranraer

The gate piers at Kathleen Cottage in Lochnaw, Stranraer, date from the earlier to mid 19th century and are part of a single-storey, three-bay lodge constructed from rubble. The north and south elevations feature modern painted raised margins.

On the west elevation, there is a gabled stone porch with overhanging eaves that is advanced at the center. It has a door to the north with a timber canopy above, a window to the west, and a narrow window to the south that has modern margins and glazing, which may have been enlarged or inserted. The outer bays contain two-light timber-mullioned windows.

The north elevation shows enlarged windows on both the left and right sides, with a modern addition advanced to the left that includes a window. Similarly, the south elevation has enlarged windows to the left and right, and a modern addition to the right with two windows.

The east elevation retains an original gabled jamb at the center with a window to the east, now flanked by modern additions on the north and south sides. The west elevation features timber fixed diamond-pane glazing, while the other elevations have modern glazing. The roof is covered with slightly graded grey-green slates and has a rubble stack at the center of the ridge.

The gate piers consist of a pair of square structures made of rubble, topped with ashlar capping that is ogee-moulded and surmounted by ball finials. Modern iron gates are installed between the piers.
