Description

Bonnington Bridge, located over the Water of Leith on Newhaven Road in Edinburgh, was designed by engineer David C Proudfoot and constructed between 1902 and 1903. This single span bridge features a segmental arch and has an extended built-up approach to the south, which includes a subsidiary arched span over a former mill lade. The bridge is made of squared, snecked, and stugged sandstone, with ashlar voussoirs and an archivolt. Above the voussoirs is a billeted string course, and the bridge has a coped ashlar parapet. An open balustrade runs along the bridge, which includes pedimented central dies and a swagged frieze. There is a tablet with a bronze plaque inscribed with coats of arms. The terminal piers have rusticated bases and sarcophagus dies, while the approaches feature solid stepped parapets and dies.
