Description
Adam Bridge, located over Swardon Burn at Marchmont House, was possibly designed by George Paterson and began construction in 1759. This single-arched bridge features classical detailing and is built from weathered sandstone ashlar. The bridge has coursed abutments and a coursed soffit. The round-arched openings are framed with ashlar voussoirs, and there are full-width architraved string courses along the top. The corniced eaves sit beneath the parapets, which were originally balustraded. Full-height channelled pilasters flank the openings, with rectangular piers on top that terminate the parapets. Engaged sandstone balusters are present, although some are missing. The bridge also has splayed retaining walls on the side embankments.
