Description

2 Marchmont Cottages, built around 1860 with later additions and alterations, are a pair of single-storey cottages with an attic, arranged in a symmetrical six-bay block. The cottages have single-storey, piended additions at the rear. The front is constructed from squared and snecked stugged red sandstone, while the sides and rear are made of harl-pointed rubble, with sandstone ashlar dressings. Notable features include droved quoins and droved long and short surrounds to the chamfered openings, timber mullions in the bipartite windows, and projecting cills. The gabled dormers have overhanging bracketed timber eaves, and the rear additions are harled.

On the southeast (entrance) elevation, each cottage has a centrally placed boarded timber door, with a plate glass fanlight to the left and a two-pane fanlight to the right. Decorative sandstone brackets support the pentice porch. There are bipartite windows flanking the door at ground level, with gabled wallhead dormers aligned above. The northeast (side) elevation features a blind elevation to the gabled bay, with a later addition recessed to the right. The northwest (rear) elevation has single-storey piended projections offset to the left and right of the center, each with single windows and boarded openings. The southwest (side) elevation also has a blind elevation to the gabled bay, with a later addition recessed to the left.

The front windows have lying-pane glazing in timber sash and case frames, while the rear features plate glass and four-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. The roof is made of grey/purple slate, with stone skews and bracketed skewputts. The property has cast-iron rainwater goods, and there are corniced brick-built ridge and apex stacks with various circular cans. The interiors were not seen in 1998.
