Lockhart Bridge, Union Canal, Ashley Terrace, Edinburgh

Lockhart Bridge, located on the Union Canal at Ashley Terrace in Edinburgh, was designed by David C Proudfoot, the City Road Surveyor and Engineer, in 1904. This cast-iron box girder road bridge crosses the canal and features stone abutments. The girders are decorated, and the bridge has a cast, moulded, and panelled parapet. The abutment walls facing the canal are made of coursed and stugged stone, while the outer walls consist of squared and snecked rubble. Each corner of the bridge has an ashlar parapet with a base course and moulded coping. The outer piers are stop-chamfered with cornices, and the larger inner piers also have stop-chamfering, along with an astragal and plain cornice that supports an octagonal cup finial. Additionally, the north pier features a copper commemorative plaque.
