Description
Prison Bridge is an early 19th-century bridge located at an angle across a canal. It features red brick with some grey headers set on a stone rubble base. The bridge has a central stilted arch with stone imposts and a keystone, flanked by brick piers. On the south bank, there is a tow path tunnel arch set on the curve of the abutment, which also has a stilted arch but is surrounded by rusticated stone and includes a keystone. The lower north abutment has a blind segmental archway with stone imposts and keystones. A block stone string runs at road level. The railings on the bridge are from the 20th century, while those on the south abutment are from the 19th century, although partly destroyed on the east side of the bridge. The north abutment features a swept brick parapet. Between the two arches on the west side of the bridge is a tablet dated 1840 that commemorates John Blackwell, the canal engineer.
