Description

Lyecroft is a house that was formerly a public house, built around 1820. It features red brick construction with a small section of rubble stone walling at the rear, complemented by brick and ashlar dressings. The building has shallow pitched slate roofs and brick gable stacks, along with a moulded ashlar plinth.

The street-facing south side has two storeys and includes three windows, with a set-back wing on the right. The central doorway has a six-panel door framed by a moulded ashlar doorcase topped with a pediment supported by brackets. On either side of the doorway are pairs of glazing bar sashes in moulded ashlar surrounds. Above the door, there is a single central sash with margin lights, flanked by pairs of glazing bar sashes, also in moulded ashlar surrounds.

The right wing features a pair of glazing bar sashes under a segmental arch, with a single glazing bar sash above. The rear, or canalside front, has a central doorway with a half-glazed door in a gabled brick porch. To the right, there is a pair of plain sashes under a segmental arch, and to the left, two 2-light casements. Above, there are two pairs of glazing bar sashes, each under a segmental arch.

Attached to the left are former outbuildings, with the west front featuring two sets of garage doors, a single plank door under a segmental arch, and a small 2-light casement beyond. Above these, there is a large glazing bar sash and a smaller similar sash, both under segmental arches. The east front includes a single-storey lean-to with a 2-light casement and a four-panel door, along with a blocked window and an external stack above.

Originally known as The Fox & Hounds public house, Lyecroft served the Kennet & Avon Canal.
