Description

St Peter's Church War Memorial in Devizes is a First World War memorial, constructed in 1920, with additions for the Second World War. It is situated in the churchyard to the north of the Church of St Peter, adjacent to the A361 Bath Road.

The memorial features a Calvary cross with sculpted figures on each face. On the south-west side, there is a representation of Christ on the cross, while the north-east side depicts the Virgin Mary holding the Infant Jesus. Above the figure of Christ on the vertical arm of the cross, there is a carved scroll. Below the cross-head, a carved collar incorporates shield motifs beneath the sculpted figures, with the shields displaying the monograms IHS and the Alpha and Omega. The cross stands on a tall, slender, octagonal shaft made of Clipsham sandstone, which has inverted chamfered stops and rises from a square plinth. The plinth, also made of Clipsham stone, features a chamfered top edge with curved chamfers at the corners. This is set on a two-stepped, octagonal base made of Blue Forest of Dean sandstone.

The plinth bears an inscription in incised lettering. The north-west face includes a relief-carved wreath with the words: "TO THE MEN OF THIS PLACE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WARS 1914–1919 1939–1945." The names of 45 individuals are recorded on the other three faces of the plinth, with 15 names on each face, preceded by the dates 1914–1919.
