Description

Carbrooke War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1922, with additions for the Second World War. It is situated in the churchyard to the west of the Grade I-listed Church of SS Peter and Paul and near the Grade II-listed building, The Thatched Cottage. A section of the churchyard wall has been removed to allow the memorial to be seen from the roadside, and it is accessed by a set of steps.

The memorial features a stone Calvary cross with a sculpted depiction of the Crucifixion on the west face, set beneath an ornately carved canopy with cusped tracery. This is supported by a slender octagonal shaft with a moulded collar and foot, rising from a square pedestal with chamfered top corners. The pedestal is on an octagonal plinth with roll moulding detail on alternating faces, which stands on a two-stepped octagonal base resting on a concrete foundation.

The pedestal and plinth display names and inscriptions in incised lettering. The main inscription on the west face of the pedestal reads, THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914-1919. The three westernmost faces of the plinth list the names of the First World War casualties: the north-west face has seven names under the heading FAITHFUL, the west face has seven names under the heading UNTO, and the south-west face has seven names under the heading DEATH.

On the south face of the pedestal, the dates 1939-1945 are incised, with six names of the Second World War casualties recorded on the plinth directly below.
