Description
Melbourne House dates to around 1840 and is set well back from the street, with its main west-facing front. Access is gained via a drive situated alongside Melbourne Terrace. The house is constructed of ashlar stone, set upon a projecting plinth, and extends over three storeys. Block sill courses are present on the first and second floors. The roof is hipped and slate-covered, with overhanging eaves and a small, octagonal stair light at the ridge, featuring casement windows and a lead base. Ashlar chimney stacks with moulded stone capping are situated at the ridge ends. The second-floor windows are square, with recessed sash windows and later added glazing bars. The ground floor features a pair of tripartite sash windows without glazing bars, and with block sills. A central ashlar porch provides access to the house; it has a semi-circular arched entrance with a keystone, flanked by thin Doric pilasters resting on pedestals, and a cornice with moulded coping. Round-headed side windows incorporate marginal glazing. The recessed front door has marginal glazing, a round-headed centre pane, and two flush panels below, accompanied by a semi-circular fanlight within a stone architrave surround. Single-storey extensions, slightly recessed from the front, are located on either side of the house. These extensions have half-hipped slate roofs with a moulded eaves cornice and incorporate a round-headed window to the front and two windows to the side.
