Description
Kennet Lock, located immediately north of Town Bridge at The Nursery, is an integral part of the Kennet and Avon Canal. It was built in the early 19th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The lock features a brick chamber topped with stone coping and has stone quoins at the gate recesses. It includes two sets of double wooden gates, with the top gates operated by mechanical ground paddle gearing and the bottom gates using hydraulic gate paddle gearing. The Kennet and Avon Canal itself was constructed between 1794 and 1810, with John Rennie serving as the principal engineer.
