Description

The Shepton Beauchamp War Memorial is a First World War memorial, likely dating from around 1920, with later inscriptions added. It was moved to its present location in 1994. The memorial takes the form of a calvary and is situated at the south-western corner of the churchyard, facing south. It features a carved oak figure of Christ crucified, on a wooden cross, topped with a timber canopy covered in shingles. The cross stands upon a square Hamstone plinth with chamfered corners, set on a stone step and a late 20th-century concrete base. A plaque on the south face is inscribed to the glory of God and in memory of the men of the parish who died in the Great War, listing their names, and includes a prayer for eternal rest. A subsequent plaque on the east face commemorates those who died in the Second World War (1939-1945), again with a listing of names. Another plaque on an opposing face commemorates the Silver Jubilee of King George V.
