Description
Harmeny Lodge, located at 49 Mansefield Road in Balerno, is a former stable and coachhouse designed by R S Lorimer in 1906. The building is mainly two-storey and has an asymmetrical L-plan layout, with the stable range positioned to the east. It is connected to the chauffeur's quarters by a coachhouse and harness area at the northeast corner. The exterior features white-painted harl with masonry dressings and margins, and a high snecked sandstone rubble base course with raised cills.
On the northwest elevation, there is a five-bay block with two-storey end gables that are linked by an advanced porch screen. The outer left gable is curvilinear, with a stack interrupting the apex, and windows that are off-centre to the left at both the ground and first floors. The outer right gable has a jerkin roof, with symmetrically placed windows; the ground floor window is larger, and the first-floor window is positioned directly under the eaves. The porch screen between the two gables is coped and features a pair of round-headed openings with exposed rubble abutments and a slender keystone, alongside a bipartite window to the right of the right arch.
The southwest elevation consists of a three-bay domestic range. At the centre, there is an advanced round stair turret with a bell cap that breaks the eaves, and a window located directly under the eaves. To the right, there is a flat-roofed, single-storey porch in the re-entrant angle. To the left of the turret, a bay is recessed, with a broad window off-centre to the right at ground level.
On the southeast elevation, a jerkin-roofed gable features a porch entrance to the left, with windows symmetrically arranged at both the ground and first floors. A stepped, coped screen wall to the outer right forms a stable court. The three-bay elevation of the coach house has been altered, with glazed-in carriage arches and a door to the outer right. There is a stable jamb to the outer right, with a three-bay elevation to the southwest that includes an off-centre boarded door with an upper glazed panel, a window to the left, and dressed stone vents above the openings. Additionally, there is a window and hoist door to the outer right, with the hoist breaking the eaves and having a piend roof. A flat-roofed garage is located to the outer right, featuring a two-leaf boarded door with a glazed upper panel.
The building includes a 12-pane casement window on the northwest elevation, along with 3-pane over 6-pane and 4-pane over 8-pane sash and case windows on the southwest elevation of the stables. The roof is covered with grey slate and features lead flashings, broad harled and coped ridge stacks, and stone coping to the shaped gable of the harness room.
The property is also marked by sandstone gatepiers with ogival caps.
