Description
24 Marlborough Street is an early 19th century classical house located in Portobello, Edinburgh, featuring a single storey and a symmetrical three-bay rectangular plan. The front is constructed of painted droved ashlar, while the side and rear elevations are made of painted rubble with droved ashlar margins. The building has a base course, a dentilled cornice, and a blocking course.
The northwest elevation, which is the principal front, has an advanced central bay that includes a tablet on the blocking course displaying the house name in paint and carving. There are two shallow steps leading to a central tripartite doorway with a nine-panel door, reeded pilasters, and a radial semicircular fanlight. The windows in the flanking bays feature projecting cills. To the left, there is a later slightly recessed wall that reaches the height of the eaves, topped with coping and a central door leading to a later timber lean-to.
The southeast rear elevation has a square-plan outshot at the center with later openings. There are windows in the flanking bays, and dormers were added around 1990, which flank a central wallhead stack. A conservatory, also added around 1990, is located at the rear of the outshot.
Inside, as seen in 2010, the entrance hall features a flagstone floor and elaborately detailed cornicing. The front reception rooms have moulded cornicing and working window shutters. The roof space has been partially converted into a bedroom around 1990.
The house predominantly has 12-pane timber sash and case windows and a grey graded-slate piended roof. The wallhead stacks are harled and coped, with cylindrical clay cans located at the center of the side and rear elevations. The boundary wall is made of rubble with coping and has cast-iron replacement railings.
