39 Marlborough Street, Edinburgh

39 Marlborough Street in Edinburgh is a pair of late 19th century terraced houses with later additions and alterations. The buildings are single storey and consist of five bays in total, with two to three bays per house. The walls are constructed of stugged ashlar, with squared render repairs to the lower sections, and feature droved ashlar dressings on No 37A, while the other has rendered and droved ashlar dressings. There are base and eaves courses, and slightly raised quoins on No 37A.

On the southeast (principal) elevation, the doorpieces have chamfered arrises, with deep-set panelled doors located in the left bay of No 37A and the central bay of No 39, both topped with plate glass fanlights. The remaining bays are canted.

The northwest (rear) elevation includes single storey extensions to No 37A and a two-storey harled extension at the back of No 39. The windows are 4-pane timber sash and case. The roofs are covered with grey slate, featuring piended canted windows. No 37A has a piended slate roof extension, while No 39 has a piended dormer at the rear, with the roof slope raised over the centre and right bays, and a slate-hung wall next to a flat-roof extension. There are ashlar stacks at the gableheads and a rendered elongated stack at the apex of the mutual gable. The original gutter and a Gothic-styled downpipe are still in place on No 37A.

The interiors were not seen during the last inspection in 1994. The boundary walls are made of stugged ashlar with droved ashlar coping.
