Description

Raefield, located at 43 Marlborough Street in Edinburgh, is an early 19th century pair of houses with later additions and alterations. The building is single storey and consists of five bays. The front is finished in channelled polished ashlar, while the side elevation of No 43 is made of rubble, and No 45 has a harled and blank side elevation. It features a base course, cornice, and blocking course.

On the southeast (principal) elevation, there are panelled doors in the 2nd and 4th bays, each topped with a plate glass rectangular fanlight. The remaining bays contain windows.

The southwest (side) elevation has a window on the outer left, with additional windows at the ground and first floor of an extension.

The northwest (rear) elevation includes a two-storey extension with a squared render gable end, which is lit on the right at the first floor. There is also a later single storey harled projection. Additionally, there is a two-storey extension at the rear of No 45, featuring a wooden painted canted window with stop-chamfered arrises.

The windows throughout are 4-pane timber sash and case. The roof is grey slate, with a flat roof on the single storey addition and a slate mansard roof on the extension at the rear of No 45. The gable head is finished in droved ashlar with coped detailing and mutual stacks.

The interior was not seen in 1994. The boundary walls consist of lined render for No 43 and harled and coped for No 45.
