Description

West End Cottage, located at 2 Wilkieston Road in Ratho, is an earlier 19th century single-storey cottage with a rectangular plan. Originally built as a three-bay structure, it was sympathetically extended soon after to create a five-bay layout. The cottage is constructed from stugged, coursed honey-coloured sandstone, featuring droved margins and quoins.

The south elevation showcases the five-bay design, with the original three bays at the center and a two-bay addition on the outer left. A door is positioned at the center of the cottage, flanked by windows, and there are two canted dormers symmetrically placed above. The penultimate bay on the left is blinded, while there is a window at the outer left.

On the east elevation, the gable features a window on the outer right and a smaller window in the gablehead on the outer left. Attached to the right of the cottage are stables, which have blocked feeding doors at ground level and blocked ventilation slits at the upper level, topped with a corrugated sheet metal roof.

The cottage has plate-glass sash and case windows, with the lower pane larger than the upper. The roof is covered with grey slate, and the dormers have half-piend roofs. Ashlar coping adorns the skews, with a mutual skew dividing the main cottage from the two-bay addition on the left. The chimney stacks are coped with paired circular cans.

The boundary wall surrounding the property is a low rubble wall with semi-circular coping that slopes from west to east, supported by slender stugged piers with pyramidal heads.
